It’s Our Decision, Not His

President Bush's plan to send 21,500 more U.S. soldiers into Iraq is the latest in a long series of blunders that has cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars. Even top generals do not believe in the President's plan. The vast majority of Americans know this, and they refuse to sit back and watch as more and more of our brave troops put their lives on the line for a war that America never should have fought, and that cannot be won with tanks and guns.

Outrage at the President and his irresponsible war has poured in from across the country. Thousands of you have signed Senator Kennedy's petition against this escalation. Here is what some of you had to say:

We do not want a reckless withdrawal from Iraq but no longer see any reasonable argument to escalating our participation in what has become a civil war. With no military victory possible, continued sacrifice of the lives of Americans is nothing short of madness.
—Kenneth Keith, Jr., OH

The authority to use force in Iraq that was approved by congress was not to referee a civil war. Congress and the American people must demand a new authorization to be debated and passed by Congress for an escalation to be legal.
—Wendy Dickson, MO

Battles must have a concrete mission, and exit strategy. Even my son, serving in the Marines/SOCOM agrees the war has no defined purpose. He's confused about fighting for his country and being an occupier of a nation that doesn't want him there.
—Larry Zwain, CO

It is time to get our brave troops out of the middle of Iraq's civil war and own up to the fact that this whole war was misguided and wrong.
—Nedda Allbray, NY

Preserving our constitutional system of checks and balances is essential to our ideals. Congress needs to be heard loud and clear on the war. The days of the lap dog GOP majority are over. You can help restore our constitutional checks and balances by signing Senator Kennedy's petition opposing President Bush's escalation of the war. Join thousands of your fellow concerned citizens in telling the President that sending more troops is wrong. So far he's refused to pay attention. But if Congress passes binding legislation, he'll finally have to do so.
